The function of the air filter is mainly to filter out impurities or dust in the air and let clean air enter the cylinder. Practice has proved that if the engine does not install an air filter, its life will be shortened by 2/3. In addition, the air filter also has the effect of reducing intake noise. The air filter is located in the engine air intake system, and it is an integral mechanism composed of one or several filter components that clean the air. There are two types of air filters; dry and wet.
The structure of the air filter is very simple. There is a metal or paper filter element in a shell. When the air flows through it, the impurities will be blocked and adhered to the filter element. Its advantages are simple structure, convenient maintenance, and small air intake resistance; the disadvantage is that the filtering effect is limited, and if the air filter is damaged, the dust will directly enter the engine.
Due to the harsh working environment of heavy-duty vehicles, its air filters must be numerous. There is also a safety filter after the main filter element, whose role is to prevent dust from entering the engine when the main filter element is installed and replaced, or if the main filter element is accidentally damaged. The material of the safety core is mostly non-woven fabric, and some filter paper is also used.
